Windform® Composites and SLS. From Wind Tunnel Testing to Functional On-Car Components
The Origin of Windform®. Born for Motorsport
Windform® composites were first developed by CRP Technology in the mid-1990s for the severe demands of wind tunnel testing – where dimensional accuracy, surface quality, and aerodynamic fidelity are critical. The results exceeded expectations: racing teams quickly adopted Windform® for functional on-car components, marking a shift from prototyping to race-ready additive manufacturing.
Today, carbon fiber reinforced grades deliver aerodynamic elements, air management systems, structural brackets, and covers. Glass fiber reinforced grades provide electrically insulating properties for chassis sections and bodywork near electronic components and wiring
Drawing on decades of direct motorsport experience, CRP’s Design and Engineering Team optimizes every component for SLS – achieving maximum weight reduction, part consolidation, and functional integration from single prototypes to small-batch series.
Precision Metal Manufacturing for Racing Programs
CRP Meccanica delivers race-critical metal components at the highest levels of motorsport – from titanium gearbox housings and suspension uprights to engine components and structural assemblies, combining traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art 5-axis CNC technology.
Through 5-axis CNC machining, high-precision CNC turning with live tooling, DMLS with CNC finishing, and Rapid Sand Casting with CNC finishing, CRP Meccanica processes the most demanding motorsport alloys: titanium (Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6242, Ti-6246), metal matrix composites (SupremEX® 225XE), Scalmalloy®, Ergal 7075, Maraging Steel, and high-performance aluminum alloys. Every component is manufactured under EN 9100:2018 and ISO 9001:2015 certification with full traceability.
CRP Meccanica also performs precision CNC post-processing on Windform® 3D printed parts through High Precision 5 Axis CNC Milling and High-Precision CNC Turning with Live Tooling – machined interfaces, tight-tolerance features, threaded seats, and helicoil inserts. Bonding of metal components to Windform® structures is also available for hybrid composite-metal assemblies.
