Windform Advanced Composite Materials for Industrial SLS 3D Printing

Ready for industrial SLS 3d printing

Windform® is a proprietary family of high-performance fiber-reinforced composite materials developed by CRP Technology exclusively for Selective Laser Sintering. For over 30 years, Windform® has served as the trusted material for functional end-use components, not mere prototypes, fundamentally transforming how industries approach additive manufacturing. With an expanding portfolio engineered for the most demanding operational environments, Windform® continues to set the standard across sectors that demand absolute reliability.

Born in elite motorsport where top-level teams relied on Windform® for wind tunnel models and on-car components, this material quickly proved its worth across every industrial sector. Its performance reached such exceptional levels that multiple grades have earned validation through NASA and ESA outgassing standards (ASTM E-595-07, ECSS-Q-ST-70-02C).

Today, Windform® supports everything from aerospace and automotive to defense, motorsport, medical devices, marine engineering, robotics, unmanned systems, and energy applications, manufactured consistently across CRP’s global SLS facilities in Italy, North America, and the GCC countries.

Engineered Properties Across the Full Windform® Range

Each formulation in the Windform® portfolio is purpose-built for specific performance demands. Carbon fiber reinforced grades deliver maximum stiffness, impact resistance, and fatigue performance where structural integrity is paramount.

Glass fiber reinforced grades excel in electrical applications, exceeding 1700 VRMS/mm for dielectric insulation. Flame retardant grades achieve UL 94 V-0 certification (Windform FR1), while four additional grades hold UL 94 HB rating. For applications exposed to moisture, Windform SP adds waterproof certification, expanding the material’s versatility into challenging environments.

Validated in the Harshest Environments

Windform® has been proven in conditions that push materials to their limits. Five grades have successfully passed outgassing tests per NASA and ESA standards, while SP and LX 3.0 have demonstrated durability through Vacuum UV exposure testing for space missions. Skin contact certification—including sensitive skin validation—has been achieved by five grades, making them suitable for medical and wearable applications.

Real-world field data confirms that Windform® composites have survived intense 14G vibrations, extreme thermal cycling, and prolonged saltwater exposure without compromising performance.

Beyond Rigid Composites: Flexible Materials and Advanced Surface Finishing

The Windform® range extends well beyond rigid structural composites. Windform® RL is an advanced thermoplastic elastomer that delivers exceptional flexibility, durability, and impact resistance – engineered for applications requiring complex geometries and high mechanical performance, from wearables and robotics to soft-touch automotive interiors.

For components where surface quality is critical, Windform® SLS parts can be further enhanced through CRP Technology’s vapor smoothing process, which produces smoother, water-resistant surfaces approaching injection-molded quality. This post-processing technique is particularly valuable where aerodynamics, sealing performance, or wear resistance are essential – and can be combined with manual finishing to meet the highest standards demanded by aerospace, motorsport, medical, and advanced industrial applications.
